Designated the the 44th Strategic Missile Wing from 1961 to 1991. The 821st Strategic Aerospace Division was at Ellsworth from 1959 to 1971, so the 821 designation was used for support units. The 850SMS, a Titan I squadron, was part of the 44SMW from 1961 to 1965. The 44SMW was the only Minuteman wing to have an early liquid fueled ICBM unit as part of the wing. See the Titan I page for the 850SMS patch. Designated the 44th Missile Wing from 1991 to closing in 1994, the first Minuteman wing to deactivate as part of the strategic arms reduction treaties. Ellsworth was also home to the 4ACCS, shown on the ALCS page. From 1988 to 1990, the 12th Air Division was the host unit so support units used the 812 designation.
